Snake repellent: is the snake repellent effective? | Better homes and gardens

According to information compiled by the Australian Venom Research Group and published in the Toxicon Journal, between 2000 and 2016, 35 people died of snakebites in Australia. Most of them are caused by brown snakes.

You are unlikely to want to be one of these statistics, so how can you keep the snake away and the snake repellent really effective?

Snakes detect sound through vibration-this is how they locate their prey, but also how they detect hazards and risks. If the vibration is large enough, they will regard it as a threat and stay away. Most solar and battery-powered snake repellents are based on this premise.

By emitting ultrasonic vibrations to the ground, the snake repellent sends a message to the reptiles indicating that there is a threat nearby-which keeps them away.

Sureguard Snake Repellant uses ultrasonic waves and emits vibrations up to 20 meters long to prevent snakes from entering. According to customer reviews, it works well.

A critic said; “We have found a red belly black around our garden several times, but when he decided to join our deck for happy hour, this was the last straw. Four were installed around the house. So far (only about 4 weeks) we have not seen him again. They are a bit noisy, but we are used to it. If they drive the snake away, the price is very small."

Another commentator said; “After seeing two brown snakes near my back door within a week, I desperately ordered Repellers.. There is a kennel showing dogs, and it’s important to get protection quickly. Delivery time is longer than I hoped. To be longer, none of the components were ordered when the order arrived, but I have never seen snakes since then. This is the most important aspect for my dog’s safety. Thank you.”

Sentinel Q Snake Repellent works on the same principle as Sureguard-it vibrates to scare away snakes.

By emitting vibrations that mimic cattle, Sentinel Q will make your property snake-free.

But how many units do you need? According to Oakent, who makes Sentinel Q:

Another vibrating snake deterrent is Raidar, which emits various sounds and vibrations every 50 seconds.

The great thing about Raidar is that the vibration changes every 2 days, making it a popular snake repellent in Australia. Portable, you can also take it for camping.

A homemade snake repellent solution is to use sprays made from essential oils.

Emu Ridge created a mixture of tea tree oil and lavender, which is said to keep snakes away.

Their website says to simply use it, "spray it along property boundaries, paths, rock walls or around houses, sheds, garages, or birdhouses."

"Snakes don't like open spaces. They are likely to be found around the foundations of fences, back doors, houses and sheds."

Emu Ridge claims that if you have a pet, their recipes are safe to use.

You can buy electronic snake repellent at Bunnings and Mitre 10. Sites such as Kogan also offer reptile deterrents.
